Utrechtse Sportvereniging Hercules (Utrecht Sports Association Hercules), also known as USV Hercules, Hercules Utrecht or simply Hercules, is an amateur football club in Utrecht, Netherlands. In 2014 it joined the Derde Divisie (then still known as Topklasse) after playing just one year in the Hoofdklasse.
History
In 2017, USV Hercules led 1–0 against FC Groningen in the national KNVB Cup but went on to lose the game 2–1.
In the 2021–22 season, USV Hercules qualified for the promotion playoffs, but lost 6–3 on aggregate to DVS '33 in the first round.
Hercules qualified for the promotion playoffs again in the 2022–23 season. After defeating IJsselmeervogels 11–0 on aggregate in the first round, they lost 3–1 on aggregate to GVVV in the second round.
In the 2023–24 KNVB Cup Round of 32, the club made history, winning 3–2 against Dutch giants AFC Ajax with a 93rd minute winner.
Dagli anni '20 alla fine degli anni '30, l'Hercules era una delle migliori squadre olandesi, vincendo due campionati nazionali (1927 e 1929). Nel 1927, vinse anche la KNVB Cup, completando un double.
Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, l'Hercules rimase una forza rispettabile nel calcio olandese, ma non riuscì più a vincere alcun trofeo. Retrocesse in seconda divisione nel 1954, ma fu promossa di nuovo in prima divisione nel 1957.
L'Hercules ha continuato a giocare in prima divisione fino al 1971, quando è retrocesso di nuovo in seconda divisione. Da allora, ha giocato principalmente in seconda divisione, con brevi periodi in prima divisione nel 1985-1986 e nel 1992-1993.
Nel 2016, l'Hercules è stata promossa in prima divisione dopo aver vinto il campionato di seconda divisione. Tuttavia, è retrocessa di nuovo in seconda divisione dopo una sola stagione.
L'Hercules è una delle squadre più antiche e di maggior successo nei Paesi Bassi. Ha vinto due campionati nazionali, una KNVB Cup e una Supercoppa olandese. È anche una delle poche squadre olandesi ad aver giocato in Coppa delle Coppe e in Coppa UEFA.
L'Hercules è una squadra molto popolare ad Utrecht. Ha una grande tifoseria e i suoi tifosi sono noti per la loro passione e il loro entusiasmo.
